The climate crisis and the rapid densification of cities demand innovative design approaches that reduce carbon emissions while supporting occupant wellbeing. However, many wellbeing-related factors are difficult to evaluate during the early stages of architectural design, when critical spatial and material decisions are made. This presentation introduces SpinyLeaf app, a computational tool developed to assess the wellbeing performance of high-rise buildings during early-stage design through the integration of environmental simulation, spatial analysis, machine learning, and data-driven evaluation methods.
The session will present the research underpinning the tool’s development, demonstrating how factors related to comfort, positive stimuli, and social experience can be translated into predictive wellbeing indicators for early-stage assessment. A hands-on workshop will demonstrate the tool and discuss its integration into architectural workflows. The presentation will also introduce the ongoing development of SpinyLeaf Carbon, an early-stage carbon assessment workflow focused on operational and embodied carbon emissions.

Speaker Bio:
Juliana Croffi is a computational designer, architect, and researcher specialising in computational design, environmental simulation, machine learning, and AI applications for architecture. She recently completed her PhD at the University of Adelaide, developing computational workflows for assessing occupant wellbeing in high-rise buildings.
