Designed for Disassembly – Future Life Cycle of Facades
Designed for Disassembly – Future Life Cycle of Facades
Speaker:
Dr Janine Campbell
Summary:
Contemporary façade systems can account for between 13–30% of a building’s initial embodied carbon, while typically having a shorter service life than the structural frame.
Although sustainability agendas increasingly prioritize operational performance and energy efficiency, end-of-life considerations—such as disassembly, reuse, and material recovery, these topics remain underdeveloped within façade design and planning processes.
Presented is a series of considerations as to the hinderances of façade materials re-use, several successful case-studies and research groups developing knowledge.
This talk was delivered online on 19 June 2026. Talk duration is 1 hour and 5 minutes.
